Itinerary
Penguin Pilgrimage: Ushuaia's Ultimate Ice Escapade
- Day 1: Embarkation from the End of the World
Your Antarctic odyssey commences in Ushuaia, a rugged town perched at the edge of the world on the storm-battered shores of Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. As you embark from this southernmost city, a sense of excitement and adventure fills the crisp Antarctic air.
Sailing across the legendary Beagle Channel, you'll trace the same waters where early explorers like Charles Darwin once voyaged, catching glimpses of the region's pristine beauty and diverse wildlife. The channel's powerful currents and swirling eddies offer a tantalizing preview of the untamed forces that shape this remote frontier.
- Days 2 & 3: Crossing the Drake Passage
Over the next two days, your expedition vessel will traverse the fabled Drake Passage, an infamous stretch of open water connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. These storied waters, aptly nicknamed the "Roaring Fifties" for their relentless winds and towering swells, have long served as a rite of passage for intrepid Antarctic explorers.
Keep your eyes trained on the heaving seas, where wandering albatrosses and petrels swoop effortlessly alongside the ship, hinting at the incredible wildlife that awaits. As you cross the Antarctic Convergence, where cold polar currents collide with warmer northern waters, the first glittering icebergs emerge on the horizon – a breathtaking prelude to the wonders of the White Continent.
- Days 4 to 10: Antarctic Peninsula & Antarctic Circle
Nearing the South Shetland Islands and the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula on day four , the excitement is palpable with everyone converging on one of the observation decks, watching for the first iceberg. The ocean takes on a whole new perspective once you are below the Antarctic Convergence and are surrounded by the surreal presence of floating ice sculptures.
The experienced expedition team and Captain will use their expertise to design the voyage from day to day. This allows them to make best use of the prevailing weather, ice conditions and wildlife opportunities. Because you are so far south, you will experience approximately 18-20 hours of daylight and the days can be as busy as you wish.
You will generally make landings or Zodiac excursions two, and occasionally three, times a day; cruising along spectacular ice cliffs, watching whales that are feeding near the surface, and landing on the continent and its off-shore islands to visit penguin rookeries, seal haul outs, historic huts, and other favourite spots along the Peninsula. There will be plenty of time for sleep when you get home!
During this voyage, the ship will attempt to cross the invisible line of the Antarctic Circle at latitude 66 degrees South - this is certainly a special highlight for everyone and there may even be the opportunity to celebrate with a toast on the deck. In order to reach the Antarctic Circle, the ship will motor south every night and during meal times or when we are not ashore exploring.
As you reach and cross the circle, you may notice subtle changes in the Antarctic land and icescapes, and also in the distribution of wildlife. The waters at this time of year are rich with krill and so keep a look out for whales, particularly humpbacks and minkes.
- Days 11 & 12: Returning Across the Drake Passage
As your expedition vessel turns northward, crossing once more through the legendary Drake Passage, you'll have ample time to relive the incredible wildlife encounters, breathtaking scenery, and profound moments experienced during your Antarctic explorations.
Swap tales and photos with newfound friends, attend enriching lectures by the expedition team, or simply gaze out at the vast open ocean, keeping watch for wandering albatrosses and seabirds riding the powerful winds and swells of the Roaring Fifties.
- Day 13: Disembarkation in Ushuaia
Your epic Antarctic adventure concludes as you disembark back in the world's southernmost city of Ushuaia. Yet the memories of conquering the final frontier – towering icebergs and glaciers, curious penguins and breaching whales, pristine polar landscapes few humans have witnessed – will provide a lifetime of inspiration.
No destination on Earth will ever quite look the same after experiencing the untamed majesty of Antarctica. This immersive 13-day expedition voyage truly delivers the quintessential Antarctic experience, offering daily explorations and an active itinerary enabled by your state-of-the-art expedition vessel.
